Sodexo Stop Hunger Poetry Foundation - FAQs for Sodexo families

More information about the 5-line poem length, writing style and accessibility and inclusion

FAQs for families

Q: Can the poem be shorter than 5 lines?
A: Yes! Poems can be 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 lines. As long as they're 5 lines or fewer, they qualify.

Q: Does it have to rhyme?
A: No. Rhyming is optional. Some great poems rhyme, others don't. Choose what works best for your idea.

Q: Can we write it together as a family?
A: Absolutely! Family collaborations are encouraged. Just make sure the ideas come from your child (aged 4-18!), even if you help with writing or spelling.

Q: What if we write something longer first?
A: That's actually a great approach! Write freely, then choose the 5 best lines. Many professional poets work this way.

Q: My child wants to write about several different fruits and vegetables. Can they enter more than once?
A: Each child can submit one poem. However, they can write multiple poems and then choose their favorite to submit. The extras can still be shared at school or kept as a collection at home!

Q: Can we use ChatGPT or other AI to help?
A: No. All poems must be original work by children. Using AI would disqualify the entry. However, dictionaries, thesauruses, and poetry books for inspiration are all fine!

Q: This seems hard! What if we can't think of anything?
A: Start simple:

  • Pick your child's favorite fruit or vegetable

  • Write down 10 words to describe it

  • Choose the 5 best words and put them in an order that sounds good

  • Add small connecting words if needed

  • You've got a poem!
